Keeping cards mirrored across boards will make sure they stay in sync, this will help you when you need to manage work across different boards or when you want to manage some cards by another team.

Why would you like to mirror your cards?

Keeping track of cards between boards can be a pain, this is what a card mirror will solve for you.

  • You keep a separate product backlog board and sprint development boards; in this case, you will need to be sure that the product backlog items are marked as completed when they are done in the sprint.
  • You manage work between a master program board and smaller project boards, in this case, you want to understand the status of the program without having to dive into the smaller project boards.
  • You want to delegate/manage a subset of a card by a different team, in this case, you want to keep the main board/planning updated while the card is being worked on on the sub board.

Different ways to mirror

There are different ways to mirror your cards, Placker can establish a mirror between a card and a card (across different boards) and between cards and checklist items.

Different attributes to mirror

When you establish a mirror the following attributes will get mirrored:

  • Title of the cards (only for card to card mirrored items)
  • Description of the cards (only for card to card mirrored items)
  • Comment of the cards (only for card to card mirrored items)
  • Status, including the status list or status label when the board has been set to track the progress by list or label.
  • Plan dates, the plan start date, plan end date and duration of the card/checklist item
  • Effort (planned and actual) of the card/checklist item
  • Story points (planned and actual) of the card/checklist item
  • Duration
  • Progress %

Mirror to comment

By default, mirrored attributes will get synchronized between the two items, instead of updating an attribute, you can also decide to add a comment to the card. This way the mirrored card will keep the old attribute while the comment makes it clear what was changed.

See 'how to change your mirrored settings' for more details on how to change this.

One way mirror / different attributes per card

By default, cards will get mirrored in both ways for the same attributes. You can select the mirrored attribute for each of the cards or make it a one-way sync by using the advanced settings.

See 'how to change your mirrored settings' for more details on how to change this.

How to setup a card mirror

We'll show you how to create a card mirror for the different mirror types

Card to card mirror

This will establish a card mirror between two cards on two different boards, you can simply drag your card to the target list and select mirror in the pop-up. When you confirm a mirror copy is created and will be kept synchronized.

After the mirror is created, the mirror icon is shown on the card and checklist item, and the link to the mirror settings are available from the settings panel.

Checklist item to card mirror

This will establish a mirror between a checklist item and a card. You can simply drag your checklist item to the target list and confirm creating the mirror in the pop-up. When you confirm a mirror copy is created and will be kept synchronized.

In the pop-up you can check the checkbox to add the original card title to the title of the card, this will make sure the card is recognized on the target board. For example when a checklist item has the title 'Create design document' it is important to know that this relates to the 'New feature X' card.

After the mirror is created, the mirror icon is shown on the card and checklist item, and the link to the mirror settings are available from the settings panel.

Card to checklist item mirror

This will establish a mirror between a card a checklist item. You can simply drag your card to the checklist and confirm creating the mirror in the pop-up. When you confirm a mirror copy is created and will be kept synchronized.

After the mirror is created, the mirror icon is shown on the card and checklist item, and the link to the mirror settings are available from the settings panel.

Checklist to cards

You can also create cards for all checklist items in one go by dragging the checklist to the title of the target list.

After the mirror is created, the mirror icon is shown on the cards and checklist items, and the link to the mirror settings are available from the settings panel.

How to change or delete the mirror settings

You can change or delete the mirror settings from the right-hand card detail panel. When you click on the card, you will see that the text 'Click to view mirrored card' is available when you click on this, the mirrored card will be opened. When you click on 'edit' on the right-hand side of this text, you can edit the mirror settings.

From here, you can change the mirrored attributes by (un)checking the attributes, be sure to click 'save changes' to save your changes afterward.

Use different mirror settings for each card/checklist item

By default attributes are mirrored both ways, you can change the mirror attributes for each way when you access the advanced settings.

Here clicking on the 'Use different mirror settings for each card' will allow you to set the mirror settings for both ways.

Create comments instead of updating the card mirror attributes

Go to advanced settings and check 'Instead of updating attributes, create a comment', then save the changes. Now when cards are updated, a comment is added instead of the card attribute.

Please note: This works for card to card mirrors only (as checklist items do not have comments)
